If you’re like many people, you want to publish a book. Chances are, publishing your book is on your bucket list, but you’re just not sure where to begin. For the purposes of this post, let’s assume you’ve already written a full manuscript. However, it’s just sitting in your computer. How do you publish a book and share it with the world?
Let’s start with the basics.
Finding a good editor is your first priority in your quest to publish a book. It should be someone whose goal is to partner with you to polish your words into a compelling story. Your editor will make suggestions to improve dialogue, narration, and story flow. If you’re writing a nonfiction book, they will help you identify your audience, hone your message, and decide what to include from your own life. Actually, whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction, a good editor will ask you about your audience, your motivation for writing, and your goals for the book. Do you want to be a bestseller? Are you writing and publishing your book to leave behind a legacy for your family? No matter the goal, a good editor will help you craft your words into an entertaining, thought-provoking, and/or informative read.
Once your book is professionally edited, you can either a.) try for years to get the attention of a literary agent and traditional publisher or b.) hire a reputable self-publishing company to publish your book. Not surprisingly, the Women of Writestream recommend option b. However, that comes with a warning, as we’ve discussed our previous posts The Cost of Self-Publishing and Who Will Publish My Book. Bottom line: do your homework before you sign a contract.
That said, a good self-publishing company will guide you through the entire process of publishing your book. They will provide a customized cover, back cover book description, back cover head shot and author bio, and professional interior formatting for paperback and eBook. Additionally, they will ensure that your cover file fits the required parameters for uploading and that all photos included in the book meet quality standards. In other words, a good self-publishing company will guarantee that your book’s production values are top-notch.
